The opening move of the consciousness-science sequence, and a self-audit: the author returns to his own 2025 equation, which set five structural quantities equal to consciousness, and locates the error not in any term or in the mathematics but in the equals sign.
Every quantity on the right-hand side measures structure — how a system integrates, binds across time, holds a boundary. None measures experience. The paper’s diagnosis is that we read a correlation true in our own single case as an identity true everywhere, the hard problem seen through a structural frame. The paper is careful to mark this diagnosis as old, a version of Nagel’s question, so the contribution is not mistaken for the setup.
What the paper claims as new arrives in §V: the inversion. The equals sign does not only over-attribute mind to systems like power grids; it under-recognizes mind wherever a structure differs from ours, because it has quietly made our own topology the unit of measure. Hence the title — a differently organized system may be conscious otherwise, not less. That consequence is named as the live claim, and the sequel papers take it up.

The error is the identification, not the model. Structural measures can be sound and still fail to measure experience; equating them with consciousness converts a single-case correlation into a universal identity.

What it does not claim
Not a new diagnosis. By the paper’s own framing, the core diagnosis is not itself new — it is the hard problem in a structural register — and the essay marks the old from the new so the setup is not mistaken for the contribution.
A flagged premise, an unmapped consequence. The paper’s physical premise — that to be physical is to make a difference — is flagged as load-bearing and argued elsewhere, not defended here; and the consequence the inversion opens is pointed to, explicitly not yet worked out.
